Early Autum Essay
Langston Hughes short story ââ¬Å"Early Autumnâ⬠demonstrates how distance and time can heal a broken heart. The main character Bill illustrates his distance from Mary showing that he has moved on with his life and relationship. The symbolism in Langston Hughes short story ââ¬Å"Early Autumnâ⬠reveals the coldness and distance Bill has towards his and Maryââ¬â¢s once relationship. Hughes writes, ââ¬Å"It was late afternoon. Nearly sunset. Cold. â⬠(Hughes, n. d. , para 4) is a perfect example of Billââ¬â¢s and Maryââ¬â¢s lost relationship. The sunset symbolizes the darkness and coldness in Bill and Maryââ¬â¢s now relationship. Bill is unable to see anything other than a casual friendship with Mary. The coldness has moved in and fall has packed her bags and winter has now arrived to take up residence. The trees are bare and lifeless, it resembles how Bill feels towards the relationship him and Mary once shared, he is emotionless almost lifeless towards Mary. For Bill the darkness is so thick he is unable to see anything in front of him. This woman standing before him may have been someone he once knew a long time ago but she is now someone he no longer recognizes. Itââ¬â¢s like the grim reaper had made his appearance taking any life and happiness that had been for Bill and Maryââ¬â¢s once relationship. For Bill that part of his life had been buried and laid to rest a long time ago. The handshake symbolizes the finality of the once relationship for Bill. Mary still clings to the hope that Bill has feelings for her upon seeing him again (ââ¬Å"Unconsciously, she lifted her face as though wanting a kiss, but he held out his hand. Hughes, n. d. , para 3). Bill extends his hand to Mary almost instantly severing any idea of romanticism that Mary could have possibly had. Bill extends his hand to Mary almost instantly severing any idea of romanticism that Mary could have possibly had. Billââ¬â¢s almost business like handshake shows that he doesnââ¬â¢t foster the same ideas or cling to the same memories that Mary does. Bill treats Mary as a colleague, not someone he one shared such an intimate part of himself with. He buried his feelings for Mary the day she gave up on him and their relationship. He now only sees Mary as an acquaintance. The unknown people walking around symbolize how Bill and Mary really no longer know each other. Standing talking to Mary in the hustle and bustle of the New York City streets, (ââ¬Å"A great many people went past them through the park. People they didnââ¬â¢t knowâ⬠Hughes, n. d. , para 4). Throughout the years that past and the lives they have lived people have weaved in and out. They now both lived two separate lives; Bills life was full of happiness and Maryââ¬â¢s life full of regret. But standing there on the street that day they were strangers themselves. Many years passing just like the people passing by on the busy city street. Even though knowing each other, sharing stories and lives with each other once upon a time, having an intimacy knowing each other in and out. Distance, time and experience have made them different people almost foreign to each other in a way. They are no longer the people they once knew now they are strangers much like the people weaving in and out on the busy streets. The use of Billââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢s name symbolizes his happiness with his marriage and his wife. Bill has made a life for himself and is a very happy man. He tells Mary of this life and of his family with such enthusiasm and pride that you can tell he is right where he wants to be. When talking with Mary at one point Bill mentions his wife by name, Mary on the other hand seems to forget her that she husband. Not once during her and Billââ¬â¢s conversation does she mention him by name. (ââ¬Å"Sure,â⬠he replied. ââ¬Å"You and your husband must have dinner with my family some night. Any night. Lucille and Iââ¬â¢d love to have you. â⬠Hughes, n. d. , para 7). Bill invites Mary and her husband to his house for dinner and calls his wife by name. Saying (ââ¬Å"Lucille and Iââ¬â¢d love to have youâ⬠. ) Bill added a hidden intimacy for his wife by calling her by name. Letting Mary know then and there he loved his wife, by stating her name brought a reality to the fantasy for Mary. Ending and crushing any hope Mary may had clung to. Bill was happy and enjoyed his life; never once regretting his decisionââ¬â¢s. Whereas Mary will live with regret for the rest of her life. I truly enjoyed this short story; I think a majority of people can relate. For me it was the lost love or the one who got away. I think that everyone in some way has had this happen to them I know that I have. I can relate to Bill, I can understand how he loved someone so much and they could just move on so easily without so much as a single word. Having your trust broken and it taking years before you can trust someone again is a long and painful road. I think love and relationships are something a lot of people take for granted now a days. Fighting over petty things, putting material possessions over human worth seems to be the norm for most relationships now a days. Fighting with someone and instead of talking it over or working it out; people holding grudges or moving on without so much as a single word uttered. But for Bill it worked out he found love, true love. I think for me the story showed that sometimes it takes a couple of wrong ones until your find the right one. To not let one bad experience jade you for the rest of your life because at the end of it all there is always a silver lining.

Prison Socialization And The Correctional Institution
Introduction Academics have endeavoured to research and identify models of imprisonment connected with variations in prisoner behaviour within the correctional institution. (Cao, Zhao, Dine, 1997). In corrections institutions there have been two established, yet divided viewpoints which are the ââ¬Å"importation and deprivationâ⬠models of imprisonment. Sometimes, in overcrowded prison systems, managing harmony and continuity is vital for both correctional officers and inmates. A disciplinary action against inmates is usually the primary instrument used by corrections officers to ensure harmony in the prison environment. These actions are vital for correction staff, as this shows the prisoners adaption to the correctional system. This essay will define and distinguish between these two models of imprisonment. Importation Model The term importation model was first coined in the 1960s by Donald Cressey and John Irwin who contested the current indigenous origin/deprivation models by proposing a revolutionary unlike exposition named the importation model. This focuses on the effect of prior to prison socialization experiences as pivotal in framing the development in regards to prisoner sub-cultures. This model suggests that the prisonerââ¬â¢s behaviour is a reflection of a history of attitudes and behaviours previously retained by offenders upon entering correctional institutions .This model challenges the idea that inmate behaviours are merely shaped or changed due to this new ââ¬Å"Show MoreRelatedGoffmans Theory on Total Institutions1714 Words à |à 7 PagesElaine Tyler SOC 101: Introduction to Sociology Instructor: Jeremy Baker July 8, 2013 ERVIN GOFFMAN Goffmans Theory on Total Institutions We interact with a variety of people on a regular basis who influence our behavior but who are not family or friends. Improving The Economy Is Difficult For All Individuals Essay
The present day economy is completely unstableââ¬âit fluctuates up and down, with no reliable way to know for sure what it will look like the next day. Navigating our economy is extremely difficult for all individuals, but especially for students. This is because students are young adults, learning how to be independent, self-reliant, and manage their finances at the same time as being a full-time student. In order for students in college to navigate the economy in a successful manner, I would recommend three methodsââ¬âlimit excessive spending, take out less loans, and start working at an earlier age. In following these three steps, students can better manage their finances, become financially independent at a young age, and can better navigate the unpredictable economy. Firstly, and most importantly, students with loans should limit excessive spending which could add on to their loans and make it more difficult to pay off. Instead of using the time at college to buy unnecessary things, students should stick to what they need so that they wonââ¬â¢t have extra loans on top of the expensive student loans that they might have. Furthermore, students should try to get a job and pay off their loans. In this way, they can become financially independent at an earlier age and be free of their debt, whereas if they spend frivolously, they would have a heap of loans that might take them double the time to pay off. Theres nothing wrong with being different but Miss Strangest seems to have a problem with that. I think shes Just overreacting over something that could be easily mistaken like all the other letters shes written. I see her small, porcelain face and an overwhelming feeling of fatherly affection overcomes me as I peer into her crib. But then Im struck dead as I realize something. She was turning blue.

Theater Experience Essays - Startup Cult, Nelle A. Coley
Theater Experience Ok, so the only reason I joined theater class was because I needed an easy A. A blow-off class of some sort, to balance out the rest of my schedule. I got much more than that. I am taking with me a sense of self-worth, and confidence. I acquired the ability to think on my feet, and the motivation to get up and do something when faced with a new situation, not just giggle and turn red. The biggest thing, I think, is the ability to just talk to people and not be worried about what they think. After all, I can't be embarrassed after I think about some of the stuff that I did this year in front of the class. I found that I can go ahead and talk to someone I don't know, instead of just standing there, awkwardly. After spending five weeks on improvisation during the first semester, I can think on my feet. It also gives me something to do when the telemarketers call. I can think of something to say when I'm talking to one of dad's clients. And of course, if someone gets into a situation that they can't quite explain, I can whip up a story in no time flat, (not that I would ever get into trouble or anything). After taking the class, I never have my back to someone when I'm talking. I can project, (sort of). I know what Snagglepus is talking about when he says "Exit, stage right!" Stage fright is no longer a big thing for me. I can play a crazy role very well. I can talk in British and Russian accents, (..."Daahlink, ve must get moose and skverrl!"). I can pick out bad actors/actresses in movies and shows. I have a deep respect for the theater arts. I am not much of an actress, but I love being backstage, all stressed out, trying to iron out all the last minute wrinkles before the show. Being in theater class introduced me to Theatre Club, which gave me a chance to be a part of this year's production. I was glad to do everything from pinning up costumes, to reprogramming the light board for the fifty-eighth time, to just being the gopher, or listening to a nervous actress go over her dramatic solo one last time. It's just knowing that I am part of the whole thing, working with so many people for so long, then watching it all come together. Backstage craft wasn't a big part of the class, but the relationship/every-one-is-a-link-universal-truth part of it was an undertone lesson throughout the whole class. When we had to work with people that we had known all our lives, but had never talked to before, and create something; that was cool. Through theater class, I got introduced to the lighting and sound room, which I love. I guess it's a power trip, or something, but I just feel good knowing that I am the first female student to ever run the school's light board. I like being in charge, and being able to lock the door, and not let anyone in. Next year, I will have to train a sophomore to take over my job, before I graduate, which seems pretty scary, and puts my remaining high school timeframe in perspective. I have tried to outline some of random thoughts about the past year's third hour class. It wasn't the blow-off class I was expecting, and it helped me get through a few of my other classes. In college, I may pursue the backstage positions, but honestly, I don't think that theater will be a major part in my life as I go riding off into the sunset, but I've enjoyed it all the same.
